Highlights

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is occurring at an alarming rate. Surveillance is the cornerstone for evaluating the burden of AMR to inform treatment decisions at local, national, and global levels. We use state of the art phenotypic and whole genome sequencing to investigate antimicrobial resistance in commonly isolated bacteria species recovered from humans, livestock/food and the environment.

National Pilot

We train laboratory staff from the human and animal health sectors to correctly identify bacteria species and to perform standard antimicrobial susceptibility testing. We sequence bacteria species from 12 hospitals across all the regions in Ghsana as part of AMR Surveillance.

TriCycle

The Tricycle is a surveillance project for investigating Extended Spectrum Beta lactamase producing bacteria species recovered from humans, livestock/food and the environment in Ghana.

Small Projects

Our small projects comprises of supporting other laboratories, institutions, organizations and students who want to perform whole genome sequencing and analysis of bacteria species isolated from their line of work or research projects.

My research focuses on the use of phenotypic and molecular tools, such as whole genome sequencing for surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria species from humans, livestock and the environment. I have special interest in superbugs like methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing bacteria (among others) with an overall goal of tackling AMR through research, surveillance and capacity building on the African continent.
