Dr. Alberta Ayebi

The sessions were practical, engaging, and highlighted how affordable approaches can still deliver high-quality results. For my own research, which involves isolating uropathogens and detecting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes, the lessons from this workshop are directly applicable. By learning how to generate pure cultures, minimize contamination, and situate results within the context of metadata, I can now strengthen the integrity of my datasets and improve the translational impact of my findings. This workshop has expanded my toolkit in ways that will enhance AMR research, particularly in resource-limited settings where affordability and precision must go hand in hand. I would highly recommend it to colleagues who want to elevate the quality of their bacterial identification workflows.

My training at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research in Accra was a pivotal moment in my professional journey. It provided me with a comprehensive understanding of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and equipped me with practical genomic and molecular tools to investigate resistance patterns in bacterial pathogens. The hands-on sessions, mentorship, and collaborative environment fostered my technical confidence and broadened my scientific perspective. Since completing the training, I have been able to apply these skills directly to support genomic surveillance and enhance laboratory capacity within my institution. My success led to a job at a genomic sequencing core facility.

Participating in the two sequencing and bioinformatics trainings at NMIMR, was one of the most transformative experiences of my scientific journey. Coming from a context where access to such resources is limited, these trainings gave me invaluable hands-on experience using Illumina MiSeq and MinION sequencers, and the chance to learn how to build and run my own bioinformatics pipelines from scratch. Beyond the technical skills, I was inspired by the collaboration, leadership, and passion that define the Noguchi team. The mentorship of Prof. Beverly Egyir and the supportive, dynamic learning environment helped me see that cutting-edge research and innovation can truly thrive in Africa. This experience reshaped my vision, strengthened my confidence, and continues to guide my mission of empowering African researchers to lead impactful science for our continent.

Attending the training on Data Management for Whole Genome Sequencing has been highly beneficial to my work. The sessions provided practical knowledge on handling, organizing, and analyzing large genomic datasets, which are critical skills in my current job, involving bacterial whole-genome sequencing. I gained a deeper understanding of data storage formats, metadata organization, quality control procedures, and data sharing practices, all of which have improved the efficiency and accuracy of my data handling workflow. The hands-on exercises and demonstrations enhanced my confidence in managing sequencing data, from raw reads to processed outputs. The facilitators were knowledgeable, engaging, and provided clear explanations that linked theoretical concepts to real-world applications. Overall, the training has significantly strengthened my capacity to manage genomic data effectively and ensure data integrity for downstream analysis.
